We created this site with the idea that every campaign can benefit from well-designed, original encounters, and that crowdsourcing encounter design can add an extra layer of polish to a campaign. If you’re a Game Master, you’ve probably seen random encounter tables, and maybe you use them in your campaign. But what if it could be different? Compare these two scenarios:
1. The party is walking through the forest, and randomly encounters 1d8 goblins.
2. The party is walking through the forest and reaches a clearing. Instead of 1d8 goblins, though, a band of five bugbears has prepared an ambush! They have a plan! One of them is going to clamber up on the rocks in the clearing and hurl javelins at the party while his compatriots pull out their weapons and engage in melee. When the party dispatches the bugbears (hopefully), they have level-appropriate treasure.
The second encounter is more polished, but would probably require a lot more of your time and resources to design. First you calculate your party’s APL (in Pathfinder), look up an experience budget, look up monsters by CR in the Bestiary, do the math, create a map, plan tactics, and calculate treasure.
That is where this site comes in. The model is simple. We post themes, you design encounters. For example, one week we might post a theme of forest encounters. You create a forest encounter with all the work and the math done and upload it to the site. Other users of the site do the same. We aggregate them and present them for you in an orderly way on the site. Need an encounter for your campaign? Great, find one that fits and weave it into your game world. Next week, we might ask for encounters that focus on trolls, or encounters for high-level parties. The theme will be constantly changing so you can find what you need no matter what your game setting is.
Being a Game Master doesn’t have to be an individual endeavor. We can all learn from each other and inspire each other to build bigger, better worlds with challenging encounters. We can all benefit from each other’s work.
Even though we’re just starting out, we hope to grow this site and make it big. We want your baddest dragons, your nastiest traps, your most difficult boss battles. Let’s make it happen.
NOTE: As we start promoting the site, we are accepting any and all encounters at the beginning. Later, once we have a base, we will begin themed submissions. Let ‘er rip!
